Thumbs up Two Very Important Coachella Valley Events!

You’re Invited to Get Healthy and Celebrate 75 Years of Palm Springs, Like No Place Else!

By Mayor Steve Pougnet

Ahhh Palm Springs! Just the name of our world famous city conjures up so many wonderful images, year-round sunshine, health and wellness, relaxation, rejuvenation, swimming pools and palm trees, old Spanish and iconic mid-century modern architecture, a hip and vibrant downtown – and of course movie stars! From Bob Hope to Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, George Clooney and Ben Affleck, they’ve all been here!

Get ready Coachella Valley! Saturday, April 20 will be a big day in Palm Springs as we kick off two important community events beginning with the 2nd annual Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You, 1K, 5K, 7 mile Race and Wellness Festival at Ruth Hardy Park, in partnership with the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, Desert Healthcare District and Desert Regional Medical Center. Start time is 7:30 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run kicks off at 9:30 a.m.

Then head down to historic O’Donnell Golf Course from 3- 8 p.m. where you’re invited to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Palm Springs and take a walk down memory lane for a fun-filled FREE to the community birthday bash and fireworks spectacular dubbed “Thanks for the Memories! Palm Springs through the Decades.” Free fireworks will begin about 7:30 p.m.

The celebration, presented by the City of Palm Springs, P.S. Resorts, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and community leaders Harold Matzner and Jim Houston will go down in history as one to remember and will feature a magnificent showcase exhibition highlighting the city’s legendary history and diverse culture through the decades -- from 1938 to the our current renaissance as the hippest most happening resort destination in Southern California.

The party will include delicious food and beverages from well known local restaurants, musical performances from every decade brought to you by the McCallum and Palm Canyon theaters along with entertainers from all over the Coachella Valley and beyond. There will also be fun photo booths, a Kids Zone, carnival games and much more!

In addition, the World’s Fair-style exhibition will include just about every special event, iconic tourism destination and community organization that has made Palm Springs like no place else over the past 75 years. Participants include the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Palm Springs Modernism Week, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, the Palm Springs Air Museum, the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade, the Palm Springs Historical Society and many, many more. Plus, keep your eyes out for a few celebrities who helped put Palm Springs on the international stage!

A big thank you to the party’s producer, Larry Abel of Abel/McCallister Designs and Socialize Palm Springs, who has donated his time and incredible talent to curate this important community milestone that is sure to be remembered in the history books. The City of Palm Springs would also like to give special thanks to our 75th Anniversary Angels, Jackie Autry, Helene Galen and Donna MacMillan for their additional support.

No matter where you live in the Coachella Valley, chances are you have a host of wonderful memories of Palm Springs through the decades. So bring your family, friends and your cameras -- and join us as we celebrate 75 years of Palm Springs, California, truly like no place else!
