Palm Springs Design Projects Featured in the HGTV Faces of Design Awards!

Local Design and Consultation Firm Nominated for Two Categories in National Contest

Palm Springs’ reputation as a design mecca just received even more national endorsement. H3K, a Palm Springs-based firm specializing in design consultation and project management for upscale residential and commercial remodeling and renovation, is one of the companies selected to participate in the annual The HGTV “Faces of Design Awards,” which asks nationwide viewers to vote on projects that exhibit excellence in a wide array of categories. H3K has projects in the “Curb Appeal” and “Living Large in Small Spaces” categories. Online voting opened on July 25 and will continue through September 5. Both H3K entries may be seen here.

HGTV describes the “Curb Appeal” category as residences that feature dreamy home exteriors and welcoming interiors that are sure to be the envy of the neighborhood. The “Living Large in Small Spaces” category features small homes that prove that less really can be more [see project photo at left].

“We are honored to have two of our many design projects featured in this prestigious annual contest,” said Howard Hawkes, H3K’s partner and principal. “It is exciting to see our two entries, both located in Palm Springs, be positioned against projects from all across the country. We hope that this contest highlights the beauty and drama of local architecture and the innovative and colorful nature of our design work.”

In addition to consumer online voting, the 2017 Faces of Design Awards are judged by a distinguished panel of judges that includes Jerry Locati, AIA / Principal Partner of Locati Architects, Tiffany Brooks, the host of the HGTV series Smart Home 2016, Mariel Clark, the digital video and editorial director of the lifestyle brand websites for HGTV, Travel Channel, DIY Network and Great American Country, and Cavin & Claire Costello, the Principal and CEO of architecture firm The Ranch Mine.

About The H3K Nominated Projects

The “Curb Appeal” category feature six entries, including H3K’s Midcentury Ranch in Palm Springs [see project photo at right]. This classic midcentury modern home, located in south Palm Springs, was a top-to-bottom residential renovation (including interior design) that was completed in July of 2014. The residence features concrete pavers and slabs in disparate sizes that draw visual interest. A lush, green lawn with stone slab walkway adds to the curb appeal of this modern ranch home, which is surrounded by stately palm trees. The home’s attractive hardscaping of gravel is accented by a grouping of cactus plants in the front, while a narrow water feature creates the impression of a creek running in front of the home. A bold red door and Sputnik-style light fixture enliven the entryway, as well as ensure that this home from H3K Design positively pops against its desert surroundings.

The “Living Large in Small Spaces” features a new 600 square foot home in the Palm Canyon Mobile Club. The project is a micro house that is pre-fabricated to chosen design specifications, shipped to the site and then the exterior is built up around it. The small lots are completely maximized for Palm Springs outdoor living.

The lot features large pavers that create a area rug to create a contemporary living space. The interior also features a small table with two yellow chairs, abstract art, vintage-inspired posters, bright white walls, and a mix of muted and bright colors that add a playful vibe. Large windows and sliding glass doors visually enlarge the home’s small living space. Sleek white cabinets combine with smooth gray countertops and a tile backsplash in the home’s kitchen. Light hues and clean lines visually expand the space. In the bedroom, low furniture and white walls visually expand the space. A tufted gray bed offers textured bedding and a pop of color with orange pillows, while sleek white nightstands flank the bed, and a cactus table lamp nods to the Palm Springs surroundings [see project photo at left].
